In an effort to poach some customers from T-Mobile attract new customers to Sprint, the nation’s third largest carrier is offering new customers who sign up for the Sprint Framily plan free unlimited data for 12 months, along with the option to forgo a credit check.

Individuals can be eligible for the free unlimited data (a $20/month value, or $240 total value) by validating themselves in the Sprint Discount program through an employer, school, or governmental agency. The vast majority of people eligible for a discount can validate themselves online by providing Sprint with their business email address. Business accounts, on the other hand, can get the promotion by porting a number to a Sprint Framily plan.

Additionally, Sprint is taking its cues from T-Mobile making it easier for customers without the best credit to sign up for new service by offering a no credit check option. To qualify for this, new customers must either purchase a Sprint certified pre-owned device at a Sprint store, activate an existing Sprint phone, or pay full price for the phone at activation.

Is this innovation or desperation? You decide.
