Google Voice on the web gets better integration with Hangouts

Hangouts in Google VoiceAs Android Central discovered earlier today, Google Voice users can now place phone calls through Hangouts, directly from the Google Voice website. Formerly, users could only place calls through Google Talk or their own connected phones (Google Voice would ring their phones, and users would be connected to the number they wanted to call when they answered).

Unfortunately, Hangouts does not appear as a a connected phone in the Google Voice Chrome extension, or in the phone list available in the Google Voice settings on the web. Android users are also still unable to place Google Voice calls through Hangouts on their phones.

But this is a step in the right direction – and it shows Google is still devoting some time to the integration of the two services (which was supposed to be complete by now, if we were to believe the Google I/O 2013 announcement).
