Google Wallet now lets you request money, add gift cards, and more

In its never-ending quest to take on PayPal and replace traditional wallets, Google updated its Wallet app yesterday with some nice updates that quite a few people have been asking for. Namely, users are no longer restricted to adding credit cards or rewards cards, but can now also add store gift cards – and even check their balances from within the app.

Additionally, Google is now allowing people to request money a la PayPal from within the app, and users can even send money using their debit cards without incurring the normal percentage-based transaction fee.

Here’s the fill changelog from the Play Store:

What’s New

  • Store gift cards and instantly check your gift card balance
  • Request money with the Google Wallet app
  • Send money for free using your debit card
  • Spanish language support

Currently, the gift card feature only works at select merchants like AMC and Best Buy. It’s still pretty neat – and it will only get better as more merchants get one board. You can grab the update below.
