If you remember, not that long ago T-Mobile tried to hype up its Uncarrier 5.0 announcement. It turned out to be a seven-day iPhone trial, in which potential new customers could take T-Mobile for a “test drive” for free. It might be kind of exciting if you’re shopping for a new carrier, and you’re not already on T-Mobile, but for the rest of us, it was pretty boring.
Apparently, one yawn wasn’t enough.
A few days ago, T-Mobile announced new “Uncarrier” prepaid pricing, which includes a flat rate for minutes and messages of $0.10 each. The plan also has a $3.00 monthly minimum, which gives customers 30 minutes of talk or 30 SMS messages, or any combination thereof that adds up to 30.
T-Mobile is also offering these customers new daily or weekly LTE data passes. A day pass that includes 500MB is $5.00 and a seven-day pass that includes 1GB is $10.
I have yet to see what is so revolutionary or Uncarrier about these plans.
For it’s part, T-Mobile says that prepaid plans have traditionally been “difficult to understand,” and these more straightforward rates makes “it easier than ever to switch to T-Mobile.” I’m not so sure about that, and I’m just hoping that T-Mobile hasn’t started running out of ideas. Ten cent prepaid pricing for texts and minutes is certainly nothing new – Net10 built an entire business around this concept.
