Google releases new Device Assist app, designed to troubleshoot pure Android devices

In Google’s attempt to bring pure, unadulterated Android into the hands of the masses through its expanding Nexus program, Google Play Edition devices, and Android One devices for developing markets, it has probably realized that it needs to provide better support options for consumers when things don’t go as planned. Customer support has long been a thorn in Google’s side, and while it’s gotten better in the past, Google aims to continue improving, most recently through the introduction of a new app for these devices running pure Android, on Lollipop and higher.

The idea is simple: when your device is misbehaving, you should be able to simply open the app and receive some suggestions on what to do to fix your problem. This will happen through the app’s problem detection features, which aims to uncover anything that might be hindering your experience – for example, screen settings could make your battery die faster, and incorrect chargers might not be able to keep up with your power needs.

If nothing suggested by the app works, you’ll be able to send diagnostic information to Google support, and even request a callback from a support technician. Overall, it’s a really neat idea for an app that will hopefully get better with time.
