Google advertises Hangouts calling in Google Voice

CaptureI’ll start this post by saying this: I’m not sure how long this has been around, since I hardly ever visit my Google Voice account on the web. It’s something I only recently noticed, and I’m pretty sure it’s fairly new, but I apologize if this has been happening for a few weeks.

It seems as if Google is more actively advertising Hangouts calling in Google Voice on the web. When you visit your Google Voice account at google.com/voice, you should see a new link above your Google Voice number that says “Make calls from Android.” Clicking it will provide you with a link to install the Hangouts Dialer in the Google Play Store.

Whether or not this is a first step toward Google becoming a wireless carrier – your guess is as good as mine. It does seem to cement Google’s desire, though, to ween its users off of Google Voice and get them to use Hangouts exclusively.

This isn’t a new feature, as Hangouts calling has been available for months now. It’s just an interesting find, and makes me wonder if this could foretell interesting changes to come.
