Raspberry Pi 2 Model B now available

Raspberry Pi 2 model BAccording to a blog post this morning on the official Raspberry Pi website, the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B is now on sale for $35. For those who know the product, it’s 6X faster, twice the memory, same footprint as the Pi 1 Model B.

If you’re not familiar with the Raspberry Pi, the short of it is it’s a computer that’s smaller than your cell phone, contains a network jack, HDMI port, audio jack, 4 USB ports, SDCard jack, 900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU, and one gigabyte of SDRAM.

One of my many bosses uses this to stream TV and do RDP sessions, and I’ve seem some impressive projects with Roomba knife fighting done with them. Whatever you might need a little computer to do, it’s there for you.

It can run GNU/Linux and Windows 10, which means it’s probable that someone will port Android to it soon enough, although how any of these perform with only a gigabyte of memory we’ll have to see. My bet is extremely well.

You’ll have a bit of a wait trying to order one of these as the website’s being inundated with requests. I got my orders in about 15 minutes ago after trying for most of the morning, so hopefully I’ll have them in hand soon enough and begin my evil plot of creating bizarrely over-powered devices to do simple tasks.

If you’re just stepping into the game it should be noted that the Raspberry Pi Model B, and model B+ are not the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. Just make sure you check the specs before ordering and make sure that “2” is in there. Not that the older Pi models are bad, just this one’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

If you’re seeing a pretty dumbed down version of the Raspberry Pi site below, look to the right and see if it’s saying it’s in maintenance mode. If so, there’s not much you can do – too many people attempting to order all at once. I was able to get my order in at Element14 before their servers stopped responding. As of this writing, there were none listed on Amazon.
