The TYLT RIBBN is a flat, three-foot-long ribbon charging cable capable of delivering 2.4 amps to the cable’s end (which is either a micro USB or Lightning connector), and additionally delivers up to 2.4 amps to a standard USB connector for a total of 4.8 amps in one little power adapter.
4.2amps coming off of a car 12 volt power socket may sound like a lot, but it’s not. You’re looking at a maximum pull of around 22watts for the device running full TYLT, or slightly over 1/3rd the capacity of a 5amp power adapter fuse (my Element has a 15amp fuse, so yeah!).
I don’t have anything to measure conversion loss on a car power outlet to USB output, but even if the conversion loss was incredibly high you’re probably not looking at blowing a fuse.
This is not to say you couldn’t blow a fuse… but there’s probably no way that’s going to happen.
Other than that, it’s a charger, it just came out so the price is premium, but if you need a dual 2.4amp charger that can take some abuse, this might be your gadget.
I’m using one of the press photos of it in a car as my Element is in the shop today for things entirely unrelated to the electrical system – bent gas tank protection rail, alignment, bad tire, two busted TPMS sensors, thrown balance weight on at least one tire. If you’ve never visited Tennessee, wait a couple more months until we get the roads fixed – this winter destroyed them. Worst potholes in history. Yes, that’s what it takes to make me use stock photos.
The TYLT RIBBN is available in several colors and comes with either a Micro USB or Lightning connector depending on what you want. It’s available currently for between $39 and $49 at the manufacturer’s website.
