Select T-Mobile customers in Orlando and Tampa have been getting text messages from T-Mobile over the past several days, inviting them to T-Mobile’s new “Preferred Wi-Fi Network Trial.” The purpose of the trial is to experiment with partnering with WiFi providers in these areas to offload some of T-Mobile’s network traffic onto WiFi networks, thus easing congestion for other customers, while providing a seamless experience for those customers who are on the WiFi networks.
For now, customers in the trial have to have a Passpoint enabled device, which includes:
- Apple iPhone 5
- Apple iPhone 5S
- Apple iPhone 6
- Apple iPhone 6 Plus
- HTC Desire
- HTC One M8
- HTC One M9
- LG G3
- LG Leon LTE
- LG G Stylo
- LG G4
- Samsung Galaxy S 5
- Samsung Galaxy S 6
- Samsung Galaxy S 6 Edge
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Edge
- Sony Xperia Z3
- Sony Xperia Z1s
Passpoint is a feature on these devices that allows these customers to seamlessly connect calls, messages, and data through T-Mobile’s “Preferred Wi-Fi” access points, without having to manually connect to these WiFi networks. For now, this includes Bright House Networks WiFi hotspots.
T-Mobile warns that customers should have VoLTE enabled to receive the best experience – otherwise, calls will not transition seamlessly from WiFi to mobile, and could drop.
