Maybe it already happened. Perhaps I’m just late to the Final Fantasy shark jumping party. I imagine the collective “duh” expressed by everyone that reads this headline as they silently chide the author for being out of touch. Whatever the case, there is no doubt that Final Fantasy has become ridiculous.
Why? I’ll tell you. Katy Perry, that’s why. I opened up the Google Play store today to find that a Katy Perry / Final Fantasy crossover actually exists and is being advertised on the front page of the Play Store.
I checked the calendar on my phone and it confirmed that April is a distant memory so I assume this isn’t a prank. Further investigation provides more evidence that Square Enix has lost their collective minds. The game description reads:
Collaboration with Katy Perry currently underway! Play as 2D pixel art versions of Katy and listen to her new song “Immortal Flame” exclusively on FFBE! Get it now!
It’s shocking but true. The company behind classics like the OG Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII, and the Dragon Quest series actually made a playable Katy Perry character.
I couldn’t bring myself to actually install the game though the in-game screenshots actually look pretty good.
Maybe I’m just a grumpy old man but a Katy Perry licensed Final Fantasy is a step WAY too far for me. I’ll just sit here in my rocking chair playing the old SNES FF games and revel in the complete absence of any popstar tie-ins.
