In case you missed it – Peel Smart Remote was probably sending your pictures to a third party

A few weeks back my wife’s phone was pushing advertising to her lock screen and I traced the culprit to Peel Smart Remote, which we assume was preinstalled. I killed it and then today surprise, surprise, I got an email linking to this.

Peel Smart Remote

TL;DR – the 10.7.3.3 version of Peel Smart Remote was sending pictures to a third party server for no reason given. There’s an update for it out that removes the code with mention of it, but, why would you update?

According to the company that pulled the code apart it’s also attempting to collect information regarding age, gender, political affiliation, etc.

So yeah, I’d personally advise chucking it and see about organizing a class action or such. Delete it, update it, and complain loudly.

On the bright side, if you happened to lose all your photos recently chances are they stole them and they’re sitting on a third party server.
