CES 2022 announces vaccination requirement, possibly in advance of cancelling in-person CES 2022

CES 2022 is officially on the books for Las Vegas, January 5-8 2022 after having the in-person event cancelled in 2021 due to Coronavirus concerns. Today the CTA sent out a media dispatch claiming that proof of vaccination would be required to attend in-person CES next year.

Four months out from the next CES with Clark County’s hospitals completely full of Covid-19 patents, and plans in place for limiting ECMO to patients with an actual chance of making it, measures for checking antibody responses in lieu of documentation were hinted at coming later in the release.

Of course, we can’t really know what the situation is going to be like four months from now, but we can take a look at the past 18 months and see we have a post-Thanksgiving/Christmas/NY surges that blew up the US 11 days after in pretty much every situation, and see that CES 2022 will be right during the Christmas gift that keeps on giving.

So yeah… let’s converge from all across the world on Las Vegas when there is no hospital capacity and… yeah.

I do hope it happens, and that Covid’s under control at that point, but the timing of announcing plans to press forward when there’re people unable to get routine medical because the hospitals are swamped. Just seems like they could wait a week or two.

Media announcement follows:

Proof of Vaccination Required to Attend CES 2022
CTA implements additional safety protocols
Arlington, VA, August 17, 2021 – The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® today announced that CES® 2022 , the world’s most influential technology event, will require in-person attendees to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. CES 2022 will take place in Las Vegas on January 5-8, 2022. For those who may be unable to travel to Las Vegas, CTA will again create a digital event that will run in parallel with the in-person program. Digital audiences will have the opportunity to share the spirit of the in-person event.

“Based on today’s science, we understand vaccines offer us the best hope for stopping the spread of COVID-19,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA. “We all play a part in ending the pandemic through encouraging vaccinations and implementing the right safety protocols. We are taking on our responsibility by requiring proof of vaccination to attend CES 2022 in Las Vegas.”

CTA is also assessing the acceptance of proof of a positive antibody test as an alternative requirement and will share more details on this later. Safety, security and health are always a priority at CES, and we will follow state and local guidelines and recommendations by the CDC. CTA will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and will announce additional protocols closer to the show.

In Las Vegas, attendees will experience a host of new technologies from global companies, hear about the future of technology from thought leaders and collaborate face-to-face with other attendees. Some 2000 companies including major brands and start-ups will be in Las Vegas. CES 2022 will feature new categories showcasing how the industry is evolving, including space tech, food tech and NFTs.
