How To

Minutes long SMS, text, MMS, notification delays (what I’ve done/doing)

So after all of that fiasco with the 24 minute delayed smoke alarm and texts notifying me regularly at 2-3 minutes after they come in, although instantly being pushed by my phone to messages.android.com, I’ve done a couple of things and my severe delays on getting a ding/popup on the phone while the screen is off, appear to be over. This on on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.

I stress appear to be – I will note this is with a fairly short turnaround testing time, but I’ve been getting notifications on the phone slightly before the messages show up on messages.android.com, and what appears to be 10 second windows of notification from my Nest products (still slow, but a lot better.)

Here’s what I’ve done:

The ADB command

adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable

Which you will need to use every time you reboot your phone. You’ll need a computer or a local ADB client like we mentioned here.

Additionally you will need to turn adaptive battery off, and might need to turn up processing speed. With adaptive battery on I was still seeing the minute to three minute delay.

You’ll probably burn through battery a little faster, but you’ll also get notifications and be able to respond like a normal human to text messages as opposed to 3+ minute delays when you get one.
