Google Photos corruption for some

Google appears to be pushing some new compression algorithm on some Google Photos accounts and is making some photos look like they’ve been waterlogged, or a snail crawled over them, etc.

Thread after thread of complaints of damaged older photos have popped up in the last two days and the posted photos appear pretty damaged. It appears to be mostly older photos, and checking my account I can’t see any damaged ones but I’m worried it’s coming.

There are multiple threads with photos you can see, but the primary appears to be this one. Just older photos are getting taken, edited, compressed to look similar to the one above, and spewed back out into your account. Not my account, but yeah. Something is attempting to recompress and downscale and it’s getting insane.

If you want to see the damage, check out the threads… I don’t feel particularly like pulling a lot of other people’s newly damaged photos for publication here. Plenty of brand new downscaled recompressed garbage and Google says it’s been edited recently

This evidently has been going on for the past two days at this point, so no telling what level of Google Photos corruption has occurred and if it’s reversable.

Fix it, Google!
