LG Optimus Vu shown off in demo video [Updated]

The LG Optimus Vu is massive. It's got a little over half the screen size measurement of an iPad (9.7-inch vs 5-inch), which makes it much bigger than some other large-screened competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Note. To clear up some confusion: the Vu's screen has a ratio of 4:3, versus the Galaxy Note's 16:10 – this makes for a larger surface area to write on. Although the Vu's screen is a bit shorter than the Galaxy Note's, the Vu's is wider. Click through to this comparison to see the difference.

The video shows off how fast and fluid the Vu works. I've yet to use a Galaxy Note, but LG's device certainly looks like it'll give the Note a run for its money. Particularly, I would think that a more squarish screen would be better to take notes on, but I'll have to wait to get my hands on one to make a final judgement.

Do watch the video, though. Aside from showing the amazing performance the Vu seems to have, the video also includes an adorable picture of a kitten and a test of the handwriting recognition.

How do you mean it is much bigger screen than the note (5.3 inch)? I’m in the process of upgrading to the note, but the vu does appeal if it is more tiny tab than giant phone

  • Sorry for the confusion! The Note’s aspect ratio is 16:10, whereas the Vu’s is 4:3. The Vu gives you a larger surface area to write on, even though the Note is taller.

“It’s got a little over half the screen size of an iPad (9.7-inch vs 5-inch)”… That’s not right. The measurement is on the diagonal. In terms of surface area, you can fit almost four 5 inch screens on a 9.7 inch one.

The overall area doesn’t change because of the aspect ratio. It just looks different optically. The Note screen is still larger. The advantage of having a 4/3 screen is for reading and browing but you will lose the ability to watch proper HD videos which uses a wider aspect ratio.

The aspect ratio brings up a good debate. The 4/3 aspect ratio is better for most usage on a Phablet. I can’t even figure out yet which one I would like better. Very interesting. I like it.
