Windows Phone 7 launch imminent as Microsoft announces press event on October 11th

The official launch date for Microsoft's highly anticipated Windows Phone 7 has been shrouded in uncertainty since the new platform was first announced back in February, with the company simply saying we could expect to see the new devices on shelves in time for the holidays. But following some recent rumors of launch dates next month and sources reported by Pocket-lint specifically highlighting the 11th of October, the software giant has today formally sent out invites for a press event on that exact date! Although no specific details of the event were included with no mention of mobile devices or phones, multiple sources suggest this will definitely be the official launch event for Windows Phone 7, with the show in London starting at 2:00pm until 5:30pm local time.

With WP7 most likely making its grand debut on the 11th, the rumored European retail launch date of October 21st seems like a distinct possibility, with a US launch on November 8th also sounding reasonable. The over three-hour event also indicates that MS will probably have the final hardware and software on hand for the press to play with, so we can expect to see the launch line-up from the likes of Asus, Dell, HTC, LG, and Samsung.

I don't need to repeat the fact that Microsoft has a lot riding on Windows Phone 7, and I am extremely intrigued to see how it will fare in the ultra-competitive smartphone market. In the calm before the storm, what are your hopes and expectations for WP7?
