Beware of using universal Sprint chargers with your HTC EVO

Charger-fire

When buying a replacement charger for your HTC EVO, you'd think that one purchased directly from Sprint would be a safe bet, right?

Wrong. G&E reader Brad recently wrote to us about his experience with a Sprint-branded universal charger that caught fire while charging his girlfriend's phone. Brad writes:

While my girlfriend was asleep last night, her charger caught fire and burned a hole through her blanket and sheets. She sleeps with her phone on her bed (uses it as her alarm clock) so it's a miracle that this is all that happened. It seriously scares the crap out of me that this happened with her sleeping inches from this thing. It could have ended very, very badly.

He goes on to say that the mini-USB connecter was bent before this happened, which could have caused the fire. Still, a quick Google search reveals a few similar complaints from other users, all going back to this particular charger. You may also remember a similar experience a reader had with the EVO's bundled microUSB cable.

If you've been using this charger, what have your experiences been like? Have you experienced any issues, or has it been smooth sailing? We've reached out to Sprint for comment, and will be sure to let you know if we hear back.
