How to turn off “Smart Sync” on your HTC Sense 4.0 device

smartsync screenshot - for some reason we don't have an alt tag hereHave you ever noticed that your HTC Sense 4.0 device goes into a deep sleep between midnight and 7:00 a.m.? In other words, after 15 minutes of inactivity, your HTC EVO 4G LTE or HTC One series device (the One X, One S, or One V) will deactivate all data connections and turn off auto-sync in an effort to save as much battery as it can.

Some people (like me) might not really care – I’m usually sleeping at that time anyway, and I don’t like being woken up by new email notifications that can definitely wait until the morning. On the other hand, not everyone sleeps at the same time I do, so the lack of an easy toggle switch can definitely be frustrating. In other words, Smart Sync might not be so smart for everyone, after all.

Luckily, developer j4n87 has come up with an easy solution with a free app that doesn’t even require root access. Just download the app at the source link below, and use it to toggle Smart Sync on and off.

Your smartphone just got a little bit smarter.

  • While I like the idea of saving battery, it seems pretty presumptive of HTC to make this call without making it a user controllable option. Does this include texts as well? I’m sure most people don’t get emergency texts in the middle of the night but I would hate to be the one who assumes that text will make it to my phone at all hours and find out it didn’t.

I have Newt’s One S ROM installed on my EVO 3D (awesome ROM, btw) and noticed this a few nights ago sort of subconsciously. It’s good to have a way to disable it. While I dig battery life as much as the next person, between midnight and seven AM, my phone is normally connected to a charger.

  • Hmmm…. Another new one I didn’t know about. Just like you John, I’m normally asleep during those hours, but it’s a good tool to have for those times I’m up (vacation, long weekends, ECT.)

  • Ah so that’s why my sync suspiciously turned off while I was studying last night. It is pretty presumptuous of HTC but I guess I didn’t really have a problem with it until last night. That said, there should be an option in the settings, and I’m turning it off.

On an unrelated note, has anyone noticed their app associations being reset once in awhile? I’ve had to reinstate Chrome, Gmail, MX player, etc. as being my default app choices several times now. It seems to coincide with when Sense has to restart thanks to the poorly coded StumbleUpon app hogging all my memory (too bad it’s so addictive).

    • Also, it seems the developer has removed the free app. I’m guessing he wants to make some dough off of this post.

      • Lucky for me I got it this am after seeing John’s post!!!

    • I haven’t noticed that Alex, but I have ALWAYS noticed my GPS default app (Google) won’t remain as default. I’m prompted EVERY time I use the GPS to select which app I want to use. Yes, I do check the make this my default app box, but the same thing keeps happening. This was never an issue with my OG EVO. Is this happening to anyone else?

  • Hi there! Someone in my Facebook group shared this website with
