BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 update rolls out today, brings life to the tablet
The road has been long. The wait has been hard. But finally, RIM has pushed out the long-awaited 2.0 update to its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, and it brings a lot of awesome features for the 7-inch device.
Firstly, the 505MB update will bring native email, calendar, and contacts apps to RIM's tablet. This was one of my biggest complaints with the PlayBook when I reviewed it after it launched, but thankfully RIM has decided to make up for it. I found it quite inexcusable to release a business tablet without those features, but it's certainly a good thing that they're finally here.
Oh, and if you're not using the PlayBook as a business device, RIM has something for you, too: the email app also aggregates all of your messages from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. That's more than any other tablet OS can offer as of right now, and that could be a major selling point for consumers if RIM markets it correctly.
The update also brings the fabled Android app emulator. After your tablet has downloaded and installed the update, and reboots, you will be able to access the first batch of ported Android apps directly from the BlackBerry App World.
RIM also added a few miscellaneous things to the PlayBook and its ecosystem, including the BlackBerry Video Store, an updated BlackBerry Bridge app, and an improved virtual keyboard that should help you to type more efficiently.
