Dan Hesse basically confirms prepaid carriers will get old HTC EVOs; Network Vision still on schedule

In Sprint's Q1 earnings call earlier today, CEO Dan Hesse confirmed that Sprint's prepaid division, which consists of Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, will indeed be getting Sprint's old WiMAX devices as the network transitions to LTE. This all but confirms previous rumors that the HTC EVO 3D will be rebranded and appear on Virgin Mobile, while the EVO Design 4G will head to Boost.

Additionally, Network Vision is still on track, with six major cities expected to launch LTE within the next few months, and 12,000 sites on air by the end of 2012. Furthermore, as of today, work has already begun on 25% of the planned sites for 2012, and 5% are on the air. Finally, almost 1300 iDEN sites have already been taken off the air, and Sprint expects to decommission a total of 9600 by the end of September; this will free up more spectrum for increased voice services, and eventually LTE.

Even though Sprint is still posting a net loss, almost half of that is due to Network Vision expenses. In other words, once that is done, it will be much easier for Sprint to return a nice profit. In summary, things are looking pretty good!

  • I heard/saw today, that t-mobile is offering $100, if you trade in your old phone, for the HTC One S. I’m curious if Sprint will offer the same, when the EVO LTE comes out.

When I came to check out G&E today this article was on top. And right next to it was a Verizon ad saying: Verizon 4G LTE – With over SIX TIMES the coverage of AT&T.

Funny how big red doesn’t even consider Sprint as competition.

  • They are already doing something similar. On twitter they announced that if you switch on top of the credit you get for selling them your phone you will also get an extra $50.

  • This is great news. I myself will wait till December to upgrade. My 3d has plenty of life left on it especially after it gets ics. I may even keep it after upgrading depending on what its selling for on Ebay. Can’t wait to see how the lte network works out for sprint.

  • Anyone know if the original EVO 4G will be able to work on Boost?

  • Your able to put it on boost now if you know what your doing or if you pay someone to do it for you. There are a couple of the boost evo4g phones on craigslist now and I think some on ebay.

I am torn, whether to upgrade to the Evo One or stay w/ my Evo 4g. In Cleveland,OH area…don’t see the LTE coming here too soon. That, and I don’t see the need to upgrade. Anyone want to tell me what benefits I will see w/ the Evo One vs. Evo 4g? I guess I am just not sold 100% on the new phone.

  • In comparison to the kind of coverage VZW has nationwide, Sprint really isn’t a big deal to them, and shouldn’t be. However, once NV is fully active and in motion in all of the major markets – they should definitely beware.

  • Lol, you should be. It is the TRUE successor to the OG. S4 SoC blows shit out of the water. Not to mention, the SLCD2 display is drop dead gorgeous.

  • Agreed. Basically, the trade-in has to be a smart phone.

But, considering that used EVO 4Gs are going for around $100 on ebay (currently), I’d rather trade mine in, and not deal with the hassles of selling it.

Honestly, a trade-in deal, like this, would probably get me off the fence. Right now, I’m still debating on getting the EVO LTE, until after I’ve seen some feedback about it. I have to buy 2 (one for me and my wife), and I don’t want to drop $400 to get 2 LTEs until I know this new design is solid. I’m a little more willing to risk it at $200 though.

  • For what it is worth, Best Buy has a promo going on that if you trade in your OG EVO, you get $100 ($50 BB gift card, and $50 off price).

  • That’s good to know. Hopefully they still have it when the EVO LTE comes out. I’d still prefer $100 straight (no gift card), but I could put the gift cards to use.

  • I often have the same reaction.
