Official Froyo update almost arrives for Dell Streak

Streak-froyo-dir

If you're running an official Dell build on your Streak, then you probably received a software update notification today. It's November 12th, the day that many people expected Dell to release the long-awaited Android 2.2 update (preorders for the Froyo-laden Streak began today in Japan), so my inbox was slammed with "Froyo is here!" tips from excited users.

Unfortunately, that excitement quickly turned into confusion, as anyone who tried to get the update ended up at a mobileupdate.dell.com webpage that said the device was already up to date or that no software updates were available. Strange.

The update notifications and the screenshot above are obviously damning evidence that something was supposed to happen today, but why is your Streak still stuck with 1.6 or 2.1?

I've heard a number of theories today but the one that seems most likely to be true comes from StreakSmart reader Bakana, who was told by a Dell rep that one of the uploaded files was corrupt and that "they were sorting it out." The rep also said that Froyo would be "rolled out in the coming weeks."

On a related note, Dell UK posted an interesting note on its Facebook page today:

#DellStreak will begin a rollout of the 2.2 update OTA before the end of Nov. This is happening over a period of time and staggered by region, starting in the UK. You will receive notification of the update directly on your Streak. If you don’t see it before the end of Nov, please be patient as your build may be happening at a later stage.

Although this note indicates that those in the UK will receive the update first, I heard from people in the US, Germany, and elsewhere who received the notification today. Whether the actual update will really be rolled out "over a period of time" remains to be seen. Judging by that last sentence, the likelihood of all Streaks being on Android 2.2 by the end of this month seems to be up in the air too.

Never a dull moment in the Dell Streak life, eh?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Update: And the excitement never ends.
