Ice Beta ROM brings Android 4.0.3 to HTC EVO 3D

JoelZ's Android-4.0-ICS logoThere's been a flurry of activity in the HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich development world recently as multiple developers inch closer to a fully functioning ICS build. There still is not a 100% working AOSP ICS build for our phones, but after a long development run we're nearing the point where it appears that the end is in sight.

Developer JoelZ9614 has released the first beta build of ICS for the HTC EVO 3D, and while it still has some of the issues that are inherent with all alpha HTC EVO 3D ICS builds at the moment, the reasons this can't be a daily driver seem to have been whittled down to that the camera doesn't work . . . and that looks like it will be fixed shortly.

While the difference between an alpha test and a beta test are largely what the developer wants to name it, this beta runs like a greased weasel chasing after a Cheezy Poof. It's amazingly fast, and everything other than the camera that I needed to work for a daily driver worked straight out of the box or could be rigged to work.

If you're looking for a decent build of AOSP ICS that's almost fully functioning, this is a really neat effort and fun to poke around in. As with all ROMs, make sure to make a complete Nandroid backup before flashing, and if you're on HBOOT 1.50, make sure to flash from fastboot or reflash the kernel using Flash Image GUI after you install or the WiFi will be funky.
