Tip: Sync your online presence across Skype, Messenger, and Facebook Chat

Last week, Microsoft released a new Skype beta, adding support for Messenger and deepening the client’s integration with Facebook Chat. One side benefit of this is the fact that your online presence is now synced across IM services. It’s not immediately apparent, but it’s extremely useful.

If you’re like me, you probably use more than one IM service. In my case, the three I used most often are – believe it or not – the same ones that Skype now supports. In the past, I have often forgotten to update my online presence on two or three services because it’s too much effort. But now that they’re all tied into the same presence system, it it’s possible for me to instantly update all of my IM clients. Best of all, it works across many platforms, including Skype, Windows 8’s Messaging app, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Phone’s Messaging Hub, Facebook.com, Outlook.com, and even Xbox 360.

Check out the video above for a look at how it works and then try it for yourself.
