Android Ice Cream Sandwich device could drop as early as October
As you all probably know, Google's Android OS is a popular topic for us here at Pocketables, as it powers many of the devices we love. These devices include both smartphones and tablets, which has created an unfortunate fragmentation of the OS because of the separate phone and tablet versions. At Google IO this year, the Mountain View company announced a new version of the mobile OS, nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich, which would fix these problems.
Along with solving the fragmentation problems, the update is also supposed to bring an enhanced UI and more compatibility with both applications and screen resolutions. When we first got word of the new features, we were disappointed to hear that we would have to wait until Q4 of this year for a device that utilizes them. However, if "a source with knowledge of the matter" turns out to be correct, we can expect an Ice Cream Sandwich device to be released in October.
According to the source, this decision was made to keep all the folks whose original Droid contracts are up from "drooling over the iPhone 5." Considering that most rumors have the iPhone 5 landing in the same month, this certainly seems to make sense.
The recent Nexus S sale at Best Buy could be an indicator that Google will release a new Nexus device, and if they do it will likely be running the latest version of Android. Still, that does not mean the whatever might be released in October will be the Nexus Prime.
It doesn't really matter what is released though, because if it runs Ice Cream Sandwich, I will be buying it.
