HTC EVO 3D is missing from Sprint’s site [Updated]

Missing-evo-3d

For some reason, the HTC EVO 3D is no where to be found on Sprint's website. When searching for smartphones, and narrowing down choices by operating system (Android) and manufactuer (HTC), you'll get the above two choices: the EVO Design 4G and a refurbished Hero.

So what's going on here?

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. The EVO 3D didn't appear on the most recent internal EOL (end of life) list that we saw from Sprint, although the white EVO 3D was killed off back in March.

Here's one interesting possibility that's being tossed around: Since Sprint is gearing up for an imminent EVO 4G LTE launch, maybe the company has given the rest of its inventory to Virgin Mobile. Given those recent rumors that Virgin Mobile would pick up the EVO 3D and rebrand it as the EVO V 4G, this definitely seems possible.

So what do you think? Is this an innocent mistake, or is something else up?

Update: According to a Sprint spokesperson, "The award-winning HTC EVO 3D is no longer available through Sprint.com. Quantities are limited, but customer can still get HTC EVO 3D at Sprint Stores nationwide."

  • My most hopeful guess would be, that they are updating the pages for ICS.

  • I went to the sprint site and the phone is still there under Shop – 4G flash page (http://bit.ly/I9iG8v). But it’s not in the list of devices when you go to Shop – Phones and enter your zip code. Not clear to me what’s going on.

  • They wouldn’t want to sell a much cheaper phone with Ice if they are trying to sell newer more expensive versions.

  • I remember a couple of years ago the Evo 4G was missing from their site around the time the 3D was showing up.

So does this mean EVO 3d reached the “End of Life” stage?

They will still update it to ICS. HTC already said the Sprint HTC EVO 3D is getting ICS.

The big question mark is when will this happen? I’m guessing sometime after the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE comes out.

  • The 3D fad is dead. Long live the phone with the battery that can’t be replaced.

  • They did this because its very similar phones to the new EVO 4g LTE and with the update of the 4.0 coming to the EVO 3d they don’t want to risk cannibalization of the phones. Cause when the new one comes out they will have to lower the 3d cost, making more people buy the 3d and update it to the 4.0

So practically having the same phone with 3D and cheaper. Plus removable battery

  • Why are you even here?

  • Stores in my area are now liquidating their EVO 3Ds for $50 on contract.

I’m curious how this discontinuation will affect the long-rumored android ICS release for the EVO 3D. Sprint may put a stop to that as it could reduce sales for the new Evo 4G LTE. Effectively, that would force 3D owners to buy the LTE if they want ICS, even though they are likely less than one year into their contract.

This would infuriate me. I have owned the 3D for 9 months. I don’t expect to buy a top of the line phone and then have support removed (after less than a year) because they want to push a new technology.

And don’t even get me started on their marketing of the 4G wimax phones and never delivering on the promise of 4G data speeds. I live near Detroit. I would consider this a major market. Detroit never got 4G.

I think that Sprint should offer heavy discounts for Evo 3D owners who would like to upgrade to the Evo 4G LTE! And they had better actually build out the network this time! They dangled the (Wimax) 4G carrot for years and never delivered in many major markets. Shameful really, and damned near fraudulent.

  • I got burned by iPhone the first time I wanted to upgrade the on-board storage memory.

    iPhone: 8GB to 32GB = $600 (or $299 with new contract)

Android: 8GB to 32GB = $39 for new MicroSD card, no new contract = More Apps and more Music!!
