Samsung releases official Galaxy Tab teaser

Samsung_galaxy_tab_teaser

In a move either planned all along or perhaps partially spurned by all the other recent unofficial leaks, Samsung has officially spun the hype machine into overdrive by releasing its own teaser video of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab. Discounting the fact that the first leaked image was from an official source (Samsung’s South African Twitter page), the new teaser is the first official confirmation of the Galaxy Tab and firmly validates many of previously rumored details including the name, size, and Android 2.2. Other snippets of information include GPS navigation, a Swype soft keyboard, support for augmented reality features, video call capabilities, Flash support, e-reader functionality, HD movie playback, and a rear facing camera. A few question marks on specifics remain such as the type (AMOLED or LCD?) and resolution (WSVGA or WVGA?) of the screen and the resolution of the rear facing camera, previously rumored to be a 3.2MP unit.

But perhaps the biggest new bit of information is the official date when all will finally be revealed at IFA Berlin. Mark your calendars for September 2nd! I don’t know about you but I’m very much looking forward to the launch of what is fast becoming one of the most anticipated Android tablets this year. Analyze the teaser for yourself after the break and let the discussion begin in the comments!

  • You’re right, this is very highly anticipated. At least the teaser answered the question of phone capabilities. Video calling is a good indicator. The only things I’m not seeing in the video are, access to the battery and no kick stand. I hope they release another teaser between now and the 2nd just to keep up the incitement. One other positive thing is that it comes preloaded with FroYo, so people won’t have to worry about software support for it. The rumoured specs do indicate that it’s Gingerbread capatible though. At least this is not turning out to be vapourware like the Smakit S7.

  • Remaining cautiously optimistic about this one. I really like the form factor and the fact that it looks easy to hold with one hand (main design flaw of ipad)…It all comes down to the quality of the screen though. I’m having trouble of convincing myself I need a tablet, when I can get a Kindle DX for reading–and always have my cell phone for all my sub-computing needs.

Although life would be nice to have both = )

  • Hopefully by the end of September I can have either one of these or an unlocked red Streak.

I did not see any USB ports. Also, a 7″ screen just seems too small. What about HDMI, card-slot and will it support Honeycomb?

All in all, these “Pads” seem a but premature. Waiting this one out until the next generation seems the best option.

  • This teaser is great. I wished that Dell had done something like this for the Streak. The 7″ form factor seems to be more user friendly than the 10″ iPad. It also seems to port a 16:9 form factor which is also better than the iPad’s 3:4 design.

Very promising, and Samsung has a great reputation for making great flat panel TVs and good cell phones. I’m sure that experience will come in handy in making this device.

  • we will find out more on 9/2. but, Gingerbread has not even released yet and you are worried if it will support Honeycomb? honestly though, it should. the specs meet the requirements for Gingerbread, and Honeycomb is said to be a minor upgrade. whether or not Samsung will actually release either update though is another story all together.

as for waiting, the next generation will always be better.

Believe it or not, I’m more interested in the YP-MB2, the phone-less little brother of this guy. That’s something that is even more ‘pocketable’.

  • But it looks like it will only have a 4″ screen. Too small for great web browsing, or playing games, or navigation, or for reading books, etc.

I continue to believe that the 5″ form factor of the Streak is the smallest you can go and still get a true tablet user experience.

Too small for games? Don’t tell that to my Gameboy Pocket!

I meant gingerbread… with all the food acronyms it’s a bit difficult to keep track…

The thing is, I could use such a device and would love to own one. However, if I invest the 400 to 600 Euros/Dollars I would want it to be durable.

I guess waiting until Oaktrail, which is supposedly designed specifically for tablet PCs, is the more logical step.

  • Yes–I read from the Chinese early reviews or leaks that the body is very plastic feeling.

However this almost leads me to believe that it will be cheaper than the iPad which would be awesome, but definitely doubtful.

I think this thing looks awesome though. 1024×600 and you can operate it one handed, its like the perfect design compromise to the iPad body style–the narrowed body.

  • I don’t need this device but I definately want it. Perfect size for what it is intended for & as previous poster mentioned it will be much more managable size than the Ipad. With FroYo on board I can watch online video content without any problems.
