A quick list of Android 4.3 ROMs for rooted HTC EVO 4G LTEs
Just because the HTC EVO 4G LTE is most likely not getting Android 4.3 from HTC, and will probably reach end of life status at Sprint soon, it doesn’t mean that Android 4,3 is out of your reach.
While you’ll need to dip your toes into the root world a bit in order to continue using your hardware, Android 4.3 ROMs have been out and available for the HTC EVO 4G LTE almost as long as Android 4.3 has. For that matter there are Android 4.3 ROMs available for the original EVO 4G and the EVO 3D, which both reached their end of life years ago – but that’s another story.
Here’s a quick and probably incomplete rundown of what is out there at the moment with Android 4.3 that works on the last EVO.
HTC EVO 4G LTE Android 4.3 ROMs
- Beanstalk, based off of CyanogenMod
- Vanir ROM
- PACMan 4.3
- CodefireXperiment
- ParanoidAndroid 3.99
- SuperNexus
- Evervolv
- CyanogenMod
These are all AOSP, which means they’re a little different than Sense, but after a day or so playing with AOSP over Sense you won’t really have any complaints, other than perhaps the camera software – at least you can change out for better or at least different ones.
If you have any additions, let us know as I’m sure this is list is probably incomplete.
Don’t forget about Carbon ROM. I’m running that as I type this. Been about a week and it’s great!
I just downloaded CARBON!!
So smooth!
I may try it with that HAUNTED kernel . . . .
Have they fixed the camera in Carbon? I’m still on the release behind the current one because the changelog says the camera is inoperable in the current version. I’d love to update, but can’t sacrifice that.
I’m really enjoying SuperNexus
Awesome list. Installing Codefire right now
do you happened to know any known roms that contain Linaros? just read into it Linaros and seems interesting to try ….but I cant find any to flash and try out.
The big question is, Are they all fully functional?
I hate camera and Bluetooth issues. Those are some of my most used features. Oh also what about the camera button, does it work correctly? Voice and chat on 3g?
i dont like that most of them aren’t buid any good audio drivers, you have to go out of your way to flash other stuff and activate them
Can someone give me link to root my ego 4g LTE. I’m having trouble finding one that works
No MEAN ROM? I’ve been running Mean Bean and love it.
Last I heard MikeyXDA moved on the Galaxy Note 2 on another carrier. He stopped updating MeanBean a long time ago and gave the LTE to his kid. He did state that if 4.3 were released by HTC, he might update MeanBean.
I might have some items off, but that is the gist of it.
MeanBean / meanROM is 1) Sense, 2) Android 4.1 last I checked, 3) discontinued as of 7 months ago on the HTC EVO 4G LTE
Do these 4.3 ROMs have usable GPS lock? I haven’t been able to get GPS lock on any ROMs that were 4.2 AOSP/Cyanogenmod based using the many fixes out there. I really want to move on to one of these ROMs so any comments are welcome!
For now I am running UrEVO which is providing amazing battery life while being very stable.
I’ve got fine GPS with Paranoid Android beta. The version before 3.99
Paul… which one of these is your current go to rom?
Sorry, just saw comments (got 50+ emails all at once) – I’m currently undecided – last week of 4.3 seems broke on a lot of devices… something about CM upstream.
Thinking I’ll have a go-to in a day or two and probably post it…
Yeah, camera problems are a deal-breaker for me also. Anyone have one of these ROMs with no camera problems?
Paranoid Android 3.9something RC1 or 2 has no camera issues
Thanks, Paul! Checking out Paranoid Android soon.
I really like CM. I like Sense as well, but my absolute frustration is that something on CM always doesn’t work out of the box. I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing roms (I really do and I know most of it is voluntary) but it kills me that something doesn’t work. GPS, or Blue tooth or even audio. I wonder why that is? Is everything on these phones a mystery and developers literally have to hack it to find out how it works? I would imagine, I guess, HTC, or whomever doesn’t design their phone for others to change the way it works I guess..I would like to try CM again, but I need my camera AND GPS..Blue tooth. eh, not a deal breaker but I do want it to work.
As I understand it the biggest issue is that there are a lot of compiled object that HTC doesn’t release the source to, or they do 90 days after the release of an update.
Basically HTC pushes a firmware and system update via OTA.
The firmware talks to the system differently than it used to. CM has to be hacked to talk to the firmware differently.
Or someone changes everything about the Android Kernel and all of the sudden due to the change things operate differently.
And nobody’s getting paid the develop these things, and very few of the maintainers even have the device they’re maintaining for active it seems.
BeanStalk version 9/17 works great for me with the stock kernel and debloated Gapps. There’s also the 8/27 build that I’ve been running for the last month with no issues at all. Haven’t tried every single feature but IMO it’s the best custom ROM for 4.3 of any listed here. There are so many customization options it would be difficult if not impossible for me to return to a Sense build.
