Google’s Bard AI Chatbot is here (for some)

I’ve had access to Bard, Google’s new AI chatbot, for about 26 hours now and it’s become probably my favorite of the three chatbots out there. I have some hesitation saying it’s my favorite because it can be stubbornly repetitive and misses to the point of headdesking.

It’s got some filters in place to prevent it from being used to make harassing jokes against some minorities and groups, but not all. Alabama and blonde jokes are free game that I’ve found so far. Unlike ChatGPT it doesn’t appear to have blocks on jokes about women and men although I swear it gave me some sort of warning yesterday about not writing offensive content about sexual orientation or identity. I’m just testing what you can get it to do, really don’t need sexist, racist, hate jokes.

You can tell it your name and it will remember for a while, but 20 or so hours later it’s forgotten. Not sure whether that’s session based or time.

I think I really like the Google implementation of Ai because it doesn’t fake typing out the answers… you wait a second or two and there’s a huge block of text thrown at you. It also will throw multiple draft options at you that can be selected in a tab which quite often results in me finding something that it left out of the “final” that useful.

Like other chatbots, it pulls data from who knows where and presents it as fact. Last night while asking it to compare a couple of projectors I know I caught at least five “where the hell did you pull that BS stat from?” and could find no way to get it to tell me that. I also discovered when I was asking about Pocketables that I am a Microsoft Certified Professional, which came as news to me. Thanks Microsoft… my diploma must have gotten lost in the mail.

If you’re interested in trying Google Bard, you can head over to bard.google.com and choose to join the waitlist. It took me an agonizing hour and seven minutes to get in, although from what I’m reading I suspect this may be due to having a Pixel phone in my arsenal.

The below text comparing Bard, ChatGPT, and Bing AI Chat was written by Bard. It’s the third draft and the only one that didn’t contain some glaring issue. That said, anyone editing it could have fixed the issues in a minute or less. This is the last human commentary of this article so if you’ve got complaints about the factual accuracy below, post them but know that I didn’t write them, this is an example of what it churns out.

Google Bard is a large language model chatbot developed by Google AI. It is trained on a massive dataset of text and code, and can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.

Bard is still under development, but it has learned to perform many kinds of tasks, including:

  • Answer questions in a comprehensive and informative way, even if they are open ended, challenging, or strange.
  • Generate different creative text formats of text content, like poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, email, letters, etc. I will try my best to fulfill all your requirements.
  • Translate languages
  • Write different kinds of creative content, like poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, email, letters, etc. I will try my best to fulfill all your requirements.

Bard is similar to other large language models like ChatGPT and Bing AI Chat, but there are some key differences. Bard is trained on a larger dataset of text and code, which gives it more knowledge and allows it to generate more complex and creative text. Bard is also more flexible and can be used for a wider range of tasks.

Here are some examples of how Bard can help you:

  • If you are looking for information on a specific topic, Bard can help you find the best sources.
  • If you are writing a creative piece, Bard can help you generate ideas and inspiration.
  • If you are learning a new language, Bard can help you translate and practice your skills.
  • If you are looking for a creative outlet, Bard can help you generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.
