Three awesome Android games to play this weekend

featured2 - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here

Looking for some new games to try out? The Google Play Store is so full of various games, it’s hard to tell what’s worth downloading, and what’s junk. Fortunately, you have help in figuring out what to play. Check out my top three picks below that I just can’t put down.

Air Control HD

I picked up this gem during Google’s recent $0.25 sale – and I’m really glad I did. On the surface, the game sounds like it would be pretty boring: You are an air traffic controller, and you have to direct airplanes safely to their landing strips without crashing them into each other. You can pick your location and the speed of the airplanes, allowing you to maintain some amount of control over the difficulty of the game.

It sounds easy on the surface, but wait until there are 30 airplanes on your screen at the same time, and 10 of them are heading towards the same landing strip.

I know this game has been out for a little while, but it was new to me when I decided to try it out. And I’m so glad I did – it’s one of the most addicting games I’ve tried in a while. The HD version looks beautiful on my 10-inch tablet, but it’s also available for devices with standard resolution, or in a lite version you can try for free.

Zombie Smash

The same people who bring you Words with Friends, Hanging with Friends, and Scramble with Friends now bring you this zombie-flinging “survival comedy” game. As herds of dozens of zombies approach your house, your job is to pick them up, fling them across the screen, and repeat, until they become dismembered and dead (again). Collect coins and special weapons like land mines and asteroids along the way to help make your job a little bit easier.

I don’t enjoy this nearly as much as Plants vs. Zombies, but as far as fun, light-hearted zombie games go, this one’s a keeper – and it’s already provided me a couple hours of fun game play so far.

Pirates of the Caribbean

This one has been out for a while, too, but I decided I wanted to play a Caribbean-themed game after I got back from a nice vacation in Puerto Rico. If you like action-packed, edge-of-your seat action, this one isn’t for you. But if you like role-playing, with beautiful HD graphics and a decent soundtrack to boot (you’ll have to download some optional additional files to enhance your graphics), this one might be right up your alley.

Your goal here is to travel from island to island, build up a crew, accomplish different tasks on the islands, and occasionally battle other pirates. And if you’re feeling really lazy, you can set your battles on auto-pilot. It’s a fun, interactive experience overall, especially if you’re a fan of the movies. Best of all, it’s completely free.
