Froyo OTA update for AT&T-locked Dell Streak expected on February 1st

Dell-streak-froyo-feb1 While most Dell Streak users who've been enjoying Froyo (Android 2.2) for months are already looking toward Gingerbread (2.3) or Honeycomb (3.0), there are still many AT&T customers out there using Donut (1.6) who are waiting for the official OTA update to Froyo. These people have had their hopes raised and then quickly dashed more than a few times in the past, so many are now in "I'll believe it when I see it" mode whenever a new wave of "the update is coming" rumors washes ashore.

The latest "official word" that's been hitting my inbox like a tsunami comes from various Best Buy mobile consultants, Geek Squad agents, and tipsters who wish to remain anonymous. According to them, the OTA update will begin its rollout on Tuesday, February 1st (the day before the expected launch of the Dell Streak 7).

Recent activity on the Dell Software Update site has prompted many users to cross their fingers that Froyo would be delivered through official channels soon, and I guess we'll find out on the 1st whether those crossed fingers did any good. AT&T-locked Streak users are used to waiting in the dark, anyway, so what's another few days, right?

Oh, and by the way, the latest version of DJ_Steve's StreakDroid custom ROM (version 1.6.1) is capable of yielding a Quadrant benchmark score of over 3100 when overclocked. Just in case you were wondering.

  • The latest unofficial froyo update is way more advanced than the official firmware.

DJ_Steve took the official firmware and updated it many times with a lot of improvements. Pieces of Gingerbread too. Really yummy stuff.

ya ya ya… like i never heard this before. don’t get your hopes up people. i believe it when is see it. sorry to be a little sarcastic. i been running dj steve’s streakdroid rom since last year and trust me its still going to be way much better than the official dell froyo and that’s a fact.
hey Jenn, any other alternative for the dell streak 5 out there? my next smartphone gonna a 4.5″ to 5″ multicore 1gb ram/rom. what do think about samsung infuse?

  • I’m getting the Atrix until the Infuse comes out. I assume that will be the next device I use for 5 or more months.

Can anyone point me to a complete list of differences between Latest Dj_Steve’s and official. 2.2? I’ m assuming here ATT 2.2 will be same as what unlocked get today

  • If you can wait for another two weeks for the comparison & contrast, I have an unlocked, Cherry Red Streak arriving, complete with the Dell/AT&T 2.2. I also have an unlocked Streak running DJ_Steve’s v1.6.0 (haven’t had time to upgrade to v1.6.1). This will be interesting. I’m curious, too.

  • well the old saying goes “believe half of what you see,and none of what you hear” so for now i would sit back and see what happens on Feb 1

  • Since ATT is the worst carrier for Android phones, I worry that the Infuse will meet the same fate as all of the other ATT Android phones (Streak included) and take forever to get updated.

  • DJ Steve’s 1.6.1 overclocks the streak to 1.2ghz, right?
If so, is this bad for the streak? Is there a way to change it?

    Reply
  • Was curious about this too.

Actually it unlocks the ability to overclock, but doesn’t actually change the speed. You have to change the speed if you want to overclock.

I don’t worry about official update anymore since we have alot of dev that provide us with alot of modified custom rom. I hope they will come out with alot of 4.5″-5″ multicore processor soon.

  • I bought my Streak two weeks ago and I’ve encountered some bugs and glitches, but I still absolutely love the phone. Rooting and uploading an unofficial version of 2.2 seems to take too much work and is a very risky process (I’m use to the simplicity of Redsnow for the iPhone), so I’m hoping this Tuesday is indeed the time when Dell and At&t will get their crap together and release Froyo.

No it just has a modified kernel that sets over/under cock limits. You need an app like setcpu (free from xda, paid in market for dev support) to actually overclock, if you don’t install the app and set the overclock then the processor speed stays as it is on shipped roms

    Reply
  • Ok good, thanks for the info

  • Does anyone know if you go to the non-dell rom can you go back to try it on Tuesday?

    Alright…

I upgraded to 2.2 last month, using the QDL Tool. I was pretty happy, but since I feel I don’t have anything to lose, I upgraded to DJ_Steve’s 1.5.1 (which was so cool I ALMOST stopped there) and then to 1.6.1. I set aside a couple of hours and went for it.

I did this literally five minutes ago!!

Really, if you can read, follow instructions, find your way around the xda forum and most importantly DON’T PANIC, you can stop waiting for AT&T and really get some cool features on your phone.

    I’m sending DJ_Steve some money…it’s worth it!

  • I would be surprised if the comes out on February 1st.
It is most likely, if at all, coming out February 3rd (the same day as the scheduled Verizon iPhone pre-order start).

  • which hasn’t been as long as the samsung captivate or any other AT&T phone that came out before the streak with still no word on getting froyo.

  • Oh come now people. You can NOT spend you life waiting on corps. like AT&T, Dell et al. to do anything close to caring for customers AFTER they have their money. They are not in business make you happy, or even mildly satisfied. They are in business to sell you something, and if they have more fools lined up to buy than they have pissed off customers, they are succeeding. I got my Streak yesterday. I waited till I got home form work. No update? aww… that blows… Did my reading & 90 minutes later I’m running a nice 2.2 device… Am I done? oh no no… I just got to a good “base” for giving this thing 30 days of serious testing. So far, I like it. Forums like this one make me fearful, so I will stick with the developer forums. You know, where folks FIX things instead of belly aching about them.

Canada Rogers said they will release Froyo by end December then middle of January now Spring and i think the next one will probably NEXT YEAR 2012. I’m really sad about this. How about Dell issuing a standard 2.2 update for all carriers. update pleeeeeeeese….

    Reply
  • Avatar of Blairware

Now THAT’s actually a pretty decent idea! It would simply replace the “Base” 1.6 Donut with a new “Base ROM”, being 2.2 – and you know what? That is actually so logical… so SMART even that it virtually GUARANTEE’S it will never happen. Sad. Very sad. But anyone buying a Streak, having done their research KNOWS we are on our own here. If you buy it with the intention of waiting till they do the right thing, well… does the phrase “glutton for punishment” strike a chord?

I agree with [email protected]. I just did the upgrade and via the ‘qdl repair tool’ from StreakDroid.com. I won’t tell you ‘how’ much I paid for the Streak, but I will tell you that I specifically requested an ‘unlocked’ version of the device, and Dell sent me an AT&T locked version. Dell also specifically said that ‘Dell’ tech support would walk me through the update if the update was ‘not’ automatically pushed. This was around November 7, 2010 when I purchased the Streak. I had ‘problems’ with one since then, and received another device. Today I decided not to wait, and used the StreakDroid ‘QDL Tool’ to do the upgrade. Once you have the drivers ‘correctly’ installed, the upgrade is easy. Wireless works fine, all of my apps work. I don’t think I’ll go any further with other roms at this point. I am going to verify that the HotSpot app works properly. I donated $5.00 to StreakDroid. They deserve more. The phone is faster, even without the upgrade to 1.6.1…

Dude, don’t wait, do the upgrade now. Use the tutorial via this url ‘http://streakdroid.com/?page_id=78’. Get the QDL Tool and the ADB driver and get it done! I waited and tried to follow the AT&T rules, didn’t work out for me. Dell and AT&T disappoint me. Dell lied, and AT&T just doesn’t care…

Go to Streakdroid.com, and go to the tutorial link. The Qdl tool does and has anything that you need to do the upgrade. The ADB drivers were tricky, they should state that after the Qualcom driver is installed that during the actual upgrade process, the device reboots and looks for an android driver that can be installed during the process if the upgrade fails. The update can be restarted again “if” it failed… Flash is excellend, the hotspot is excellent, everything works, and you can easily go to other roms after using the Qdl tool. I choose not to, the Qdl Tool upgrade is enough for me.

well from my understanding its not dell who’s holding out on us but att since other unlocked phones already got their ota…so blame att…btw, if i was to mod to dj steve’s version would i b able to revert later IF d official version comes out?

  • Avatar of Bopdoo

Dude, look at the tutorial on Streakdroid.com! After you use the QDL Tool to upgrade, you will have the option to use the link on the Dell website to get the official update, or just stay with the QDL Tool update. If it fails, it ‘won’t’ brick your phone, just run it again. The Qual Comm and Android drivers were tricky, but not a problem… Do the upgrade!!!
